Designing an event
Assignment 3 years students at Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography
Stage 1
Design an event that will enstrengthen the social structure of ‘e
Newxds’.
Where could the words design and development possibly be exchanged?!
‘e Newxds’ is a township near Capetown
Possible ways in which you may interpret ‘event’:
occasion, happening, manifestation, festival, object, game, ...
Actually there is no limit to your thinking range... Things though you
might want to take into account are: financial possibilities or subsidiabillity
/ sponsorship / commercial exploitation.
Themes we will discuss with you are
-what is a community: fundaments/symptoms
-why should we want to make/found a community ourselves
-how can you found/stimulate the awareness of community
On the 13th of februari you will present your idea of your event to a
group of experts – not only to your tutors but also to inhabitants
of e Newxds.
The presentation of you idea will be a visual one.
The experts and your tutors are not interested in blah blah.
You will have to think of ways to visualise your idea.
Stage 2
Stage two of te project is devided in two options:
- You will realise your project; this is possible since your idea does
not need a budget, or is very easy finacially realised, and there is a
realistic perspective of doing so!
-You will develop a complete – all media coverage, if nessecary
– communication strategy to convince spectators that your idea should
be realised.
On the 2nd of March you will present your idea at the location of Cascoland
in e Newxds; the two following weeks specators will be given the chance
to look at your project, since Cascoland is part of Cape Town Festival.
Note: if we feel that your idea might be too provocative, we will not
take your project into the exhibition in e Newxds.
Note note: this does not mean that your idea or your presentation are
not good.
Side projects optional
From the Cascoland project some extra publicity might be required. You
can volunteer for that! These extra assignments will be given to you by
the participants of Cascoland, You can regard them as a client. Extra
help of guidance you can ask from your tutors in this case: Jackie, Carol
and Ruben
